The Most (Italian) Expensive Food in the World

A type of underground mushroom that looks like a potato, but costs 1000 times more.

It sells for as much as $3,600 a pound and is very difficult to find out there. We are talking about truffles, also known as "the diamonds of the kitchen".

Truffles are a type of fungus usually found in the ground, near the roots of trees. There are two main families of truffles:

  • white truffles
  • black truffles

and many other related species. Italian white truffles are the most valuable on the market and very highly esteemed. Haversed in Piedmont region (northern Italy), a kilogram of truffles can cost you up to 9.000,00 Euros: 12,300 USD!
