There are plenty of tutorials out there on how to cut a melon. We want to suggest our own idea: you won't throw away almost anything and the slicing part could be quite funny. These guidelines won't apply for the watermelon; in that case you don't need to remove the peel and the internal part, because the former can be easily cut away while you eat it and the latter is eatable (except for the seeds).
1) Wash the big fruit briefly. Remove any kind of package or plastic string around it. Prepare yourself with a spoon, a large jagged knife and a cutting board. Don't worry about any small dark spots on the skin of the fruit, they will be removed shortly;
2) Pick up the knife and cut the ends. Grab the fruit firmly or it will slip out of your hands;
3) This is the result. Throw away those two pieces, you don't need them (I put them in a plate, where I store all the discards);
4) Take the knife and split the fruit in two parts;
5) Slide the tablespoon in the central part and dig all the seeds out of it.
6) Remove all the seeds carefully: if necessary, scratch the inside with the tablespoon until the surface becomes smooth.
7) Again with the knife, slice up the fruit. I think that from a one-half part you can obtain about six or seven pieces. However it's up to you, really.
8) This is the result. I set the slices on the cutting board.
9) Pick up a slice. Put it in vertical with one of your hands (I'm left-handed, as you can see :) ) and take the knife with the other one. Let the knife slide under the peel. Here I use a smaller knife because it's more handy, but the one we've used so far is good as well.
10) Try to follow the rounded surface with the knife. If you find it difficult, move it slightly backwards and forwards, as you would saw something.
11) Repeat steps 9 and 10 for each piece. Put the peeled slices on a plate: the melon is ready to be served!
One small note, yet: the overall operation can be done even before the dinner hour. Just make sure that you cover the slices with a protective film (or with a lid, or another plate) and put the dish in the fridge. Take it out when you're ready to lunch.
